Two North Carolina locations have been noted as top spots for a little quiet time on the beach.  It seemed a bit contradictory to make a USA Today list of uncrowded beaches on the day after a July 4th holiday weekend that had beach towns bustling, but officials in Emerald Isle and Topsail Island were pleased their towns each held one of the 10 spots.

Emerald Isle and Topsail Beach are the two North Carolina destinations named in the listing of 10 uncrowded beaches to visit along the Atlantic. In comparison to large beaches along the East Coast, the small, family beach atmosphere is what these towns take pride in.  While there are busy spots, such as the main beach accesses, there are also areas of solitude.  "There are still plenty of spaces on the beach and we invite people to come" says Mayor Art Schools.

Since 2008, North Carolina has had some of the cleanest beaches in the nation - including 2012.  A report released June 5th by the Natural Resource  Defense Council detailed the environmental health of thousands of vacation beaches nationally and rated them depending on how safe (healthwise) they are for swimmers.

Rated third in the nation, (out of 30 states), North Carolina's water quality remains very good. According to Erin Bryan-Millush, an envirormental specialist with the NC Dept. of Natural Resources who monitors beaches, attributes the clean water to proactive local government and lower rain amounts than usual in 2012.
